What equipment do you need to start yoga? A simple guide for beginners
A starting point

At a glance

For your first studio class, wear comfortable clothes. Mats, blankets and props are provided, so you can try them before buying your own equipment.

What equipment do you need to start yoga?

Let’s start with a simple truth:

You do not need professional sports equipment to start yoga.

Many imagine that they need to invest in specialist, technical, expensive equipment.

In fact, you need very little to start yoga.

Everything is easy to find without breaking the bank.

1. A yoga mat: the starting point

A mat is the main piece of equipment you need.

It helps you:

  • avoid slipping
  • protect your joints
  • create a space for yourself

Where can I buy an affordable yoga mat?

There is no need for a premium model to start.

You can find a suitable mat at:

  • Décathlon
  • Go Sport
  • Amazon

For beginner yoga, look for:

  • A thickness of 4 to 6 mm
  • Good grip
  • Enough cushioning for your knees

Budget options are perfectly suitable for getting started.

Above all, try it before investing more.

2. Clothing: simple and comfortable

No special wardrobe needed.

Suitable yoga clothing is simply:

  • Leggings or flexible trousers
  • A comfortable T-shirt or vest
  • Clothes that let you move freely

Yoga is practised barefoot.

You can find these clothes at most sports shops, including Décathlon or Go Sport, without spending a lot.

Most importantly: feel comfortable.

3. Blocks and props: helpful, but optional

Blocks, straps and cushions are often seen as advanced equipment.

They can actually be very useful, especially for beginners.

They help you:

  • Adapt the postures
  • Reduce tension
  • Make movements feel more secure

The good news: most studios provide these props.

There is no need to buy anything to begin with.

4. Do you need a blanket?

During relaxation at the end of a class, your body can cool down quickly.

A throw or small blanket adds extra comfort.

Again, this is not a priority purchase.

Also, at Flow Yoga Studio, the mats and the blankets are available on site.

This lets students come and practise without carrying lots of equipment, keeping the experience simple and enjoyable.

Fewer constraints, more flow.

5. A common mistake: waiting until you have all the equipment

Many people put off their first class, thinking:

“I will buy everything I need first.”

It is often an unconscious way of postponing that first step.

The truth?

You can start with very little.

And adjust as you go.

Equipment should support your practice, not become an obstacle.

What really matters

A mat helps.

Comfortable clothing helps.

What really shapes your experience is:

  • Consistency
  • The quality of your guidance
  • The atmosphere
  • A sense of safety

Starting yoga in a calm, supportive environment will always matter more than having the latest mat.

In a few words

To start yoga, you need:

Un tapis simple (Décathlon, Go Sport ou Amazon suffisent largement)

Une tenue confortable

L’envie d’essayer

And if you practise in a studio, you can often arrive with very little equipment.

Yoga is not about equipment.

It is something you learn through experience.

And the best way to find out whether it suits you…

is to unroll a mat and breathe.
